Toby Chu - Chairman
Toby Chu has been President and Chief Executive Officer, Vice Chairman of CIBT Education Group since 1994. Mr. Chu became the Chairman of CIBT in July 2016. Since CIBT’s inception Mr. Chu structured a series of major acquisitions that became the cornerstone of CIBT’s global vision, including the acquisition of Sprott Shaw College and Acsenda School of Management in 2007 (one of the largest private career and degree granting colleges in Western Canada with 114 years of operating history). Sprott Shaw became the flagship of CIBT Group for all of its future expansions. In 2010 Mr. Chu completed the acquisition of King George International College (one of the largest language schools in Canada with 6 campuses) for $4.3 million and subsequently sold King George for $13.5 million after 3 years of reorganization and expansion. In 2017, Mr. Chu bought back King George International College and its affiliated schools which has grown to 18 campuses for $3.1 million.
Under his leadership, CIBT was ranked “One of the Fastest Growing Companies in Canada” 8 times between 1993 to 2016, amongst many other recognitions and awards. Mr. Chu was also recognized as one of the “Top 40 Business People under the Age of 40” in 1994. In 2012, Mr. Chu founded Global Education City, a division of CIBT Group. Within 3 years Mr. Chu has assembled $600 million of education real estate projects with plans to assemble up to $1 billion of student hotel and housing within 5 years. In 2015, Mr. Chu was awarded Chinese Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year.
Dr. David Hsu - Independent Vice Chairman
Dr. Hsu has been a director of CIBT Education Group since 2006 and became its chairman of the board in 2007. Dr. Hsu obtained his medical training at the medical school of the University Hamburg, Germany in 1967. He graduated with an overall rating of “excellent”. He obtained more medical training in Germany and New York City. From year 1977 to 2005, Dr. Hsu was in private practice in Orange County, California.
Dr. Hsu was one of the founders of Multi-Fineline Electronix, Inc. (MFLX) and had served as its chairman for over fifteen years and has become its Chairman Emeritus upon its IPO on Nasdaq in June 2004. In 1995, Dr. Hsu co-founded MedicineNet.com. MedicineNet.com provides medical information in layman’s language on the Internet. MedicineNet was later acquired by WebMD, a public company. From September 2000 through May 2003, Dr. Hsu served as an independent director of i-Cable, Inc., a Nasdaq and Hong Kong Exchange listed telecommunications company.
Dr. Hsu obtained the degree of Master of Business Administration from the Pepperdine University at Malibu, California in April 1987.
Troy Rice - Independent Audit Committee Chairman
Mr. Rice has been a director of CIBT Education Group since 2005. He is also a director of CIBT. From 2002 to 2005, Mr. Rice served as Senior Vice President of Business Development at Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE: UTI), an automotive repair education company. From 2001 to 2002 Mr. Rice was Vice President at PetSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM), a supplier of pet supplies and products, and from 1995 to 2001, he was a Senior Vice President of Comfort Systems U.S.A. (NYSE: FIX). Mr. Rice received his Bachelors degree in accounting from the University of Iowa in 1985 and his MBA from Arizona State University in 1992. Mr. Rice is also a CPA in the state of Arizona.
Shane Weir - Independent Director
Mr. Weir has been a director of CIBT Education Group Inc. since 2008. Mr. Weir became a solicitor, barrister and notary public in Canada in 1978. He was admitted to the bars in England and Wales and in Hong Kong as a solicitor in 1992. He works as a solicitor at the law firm Weir & Associates in Hong Kong, a firm he organized in 1985. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. Weir was director of L&D Property Limited, a real estate brokerage firm in Hong Kong. He has lectured in both Canada and Hong Kong at the university level. Mr. Weir is also a registered investment advisor and is a director of Asia Pacific Investment Advisors Ltd., an investment management firm in Hong Kong, and e-Kong Group Limited, a company with operations in the telecommunications and technology industries in the United States, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Tony David - Independent Director
Mr. David has been a director of CIBT Education Group since 1998. From 1979 to present Mr. David has been self employed as an oral maxillofacial surgeon. He is a member of the Canadian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the BC Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the College of Dental Surgeons. Mr. David has a Master of Science degree in Physiology from the University of Oregon, and a Doctorate in Dental Medicine from the Washington University School of Dental Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
Derek Feng - Independent Director
Mr. Feng was appointed as director of CIBT Education Group Inc. by the Board of Directors effective July 20, 2011. He is currently the Head of Education Investment of Fosun Group headquartered in Shanghai. Fosun Group is a conglomerate listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with asset holdings around the world. Prior to joining Fosun Group, he was the CEO of Global Education & Technology Group owned by the Pearson Group from United States. Global Education is one of the largest education companies in China with over 3,000 employees. Mr. Feng is also an investor and advisor to education companies that have significant growth opportunities, benefiting from the increasing globalization of education between Asia and North America.
From 2006 to 2011, Mr. Feng was the Executive Vice President of Strategy, Planning and Operations at Knowledge Universe, one of the largest education holding companies in the world with a network of more than 3,000 locations worldwide, over 40,000 education professionals, operating early childhood education centers, international schools, colleges, large online schools, and management systems.
Prior to joining Knowledge Universe, he was the Global Head of Business Development at GE Industrial, a US$33 billion revenue division that has operating businesses ranging from high tech instruments to equipment leasing. Mr. Feng was also an officer of GE Capital Corporation, the largest non-bank financial services company in the world with over US$600 billion in assets. Mr. Feng graduated from Tsinghua University of Beijing with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Master or Business Administration degree from UCLA, California.
